Where We Started, and Where We Still Are

Geoffrey Shafer founded PEGASUS Design-To-Build in 2001 with one goal: to design and build kitchens, additions, and whole-home remodels without the handoffs that slow projects down and drive up cost. Twenty-five years later, we are still a locally owned, owner-led firm, still operating out of Melrose, and still led by the same people who sign the plans.

We still take on a limited number of projects each year, so every client gets the attention the work demands. You can see some of our recent work in our portfolio. Most of our new work comes from neighbors of people we have already built for, and that is the standard we build toward on every project.

2001

A New Kind of Career

After years in IT, Geoffrey Shafer traded servers for sawdust and started PEGASUS out of his Melrose basement with a simple idea: remodeling should be better planned and better built.

2003

Design Joins the Team

We added in-house design services, giving clients one place to handle drawings, selections, and construction instead of coordinating between separate firms.

2018

A Permanent Home

We purchased our building on Main Street in Melrose and brought on a full-time designer, giving us a real showroom where clients could see materials in person before committing.

2020

More Help With the Details

We expanded our selections process so clients have more guidance on finishes, fixtures, and materials from start to finish, not just during the design phase.

2025

Built for Better Communication

We moved to a new project management system, giving every client clearer scheduling, more consistent updates, and better visibility into how their project is progressing.

Owner

Geoffrey is the founder and driving force behind PEGASUS Design-To-Build. With 25 years of hands-on construction and carpentry experience as a business owner and craftsman (both before and after a successful IT career), he brings a unique blend of practical building knowledge, operational efficiency, and strategic leadership. A longtime Melrose resident, Geoffrey is passionate about creating exceptional spaces and ensuring every project runs smoothly from concept to completion, handling everything from the big picture down to the smallest detail.

Jeff Patterson

Project Manager

With 28 years of experience as a licensed Massachusetts General Contractor and high-end residential builder, Jeff leads project management at PEGASUS. He specializes in custom millwork, full interior finishes, staircases, built-ins, and complete project delivery from start to finish. His calm leadership, precision, and client-focused approach keep every job on track and on budget.

Doug Brown

Architectural Designer

Doug is an experienced architectural designer with 5 years focused on project coordination, BIM/CAD documentation, code compliance, and construction administration. He excels at turning concepts into precise, buildable plans while maintaining strong attention to detail throughout the project lifecycle.

Steven Molle

Finish Carpenter

With more than 18 years of experience in residential, commercial, and municipal construction, Steve is a highly skilled finish carpenter. He specializes in trim, windows, doors, siding, cabinetry, and full interior remodels. He is known for his attention to detail and consistent quality workmanship.

A master frame-to-finish carpenter with over 40 years of experience, Jim is one of the most reliable and skilled builders in the region. He has owned his own remodeling company and excels in kitchens, bathrooms, custom built-ins, decks, porches, and high-quality interior finishes.

Hannah Shafer

Architectural Designer

Hannah is a talented Architectural Designer and Project Manager with advanced training and hands-on experience leading high-end residential renovation projects from concept through completion. She specializes in creating detailed construction documentation, developing thoughtful design solutions, managing budgets and schedules, and coordinating seamlessly with clients, contractors, and consultants to deliver exceptional results. 

Our Design-Build Process

1 | Discover

Every project starts with a conversation. We come alongside you to understand your vision, your home, and your investment range, then align on scope and priorities before any drawings begin.

2 | Design
Our in-house Architectural Designer turns your goals into conceptual drawings and a budgetary estimate built on allowances. After you sign the construction Letter of Intent, the same designer carries you through pre-construction, where we finalize every selection, bring in engineering for stamped drawings, and lock down a firm construction price.
3 | Deliver
Once the design is approved, our project manager and craftsmen take your plans from concept to completion with daily communication and detailed scheduling. The result is a home finished to the standard you agreed to, on time and on budget.
